Advanced materials for icing, friction and self-cleaning
The project studies smart hybrid materials to improve component performance in challenging conditions. Functional bulk composite materials and coatings are combined to reduce icing, soiling and flow friction. The goal is to increase functionality and service life and lower the maintenance need and environmental footprint.
An EURA 2021 –funded project
The project has received funding from European Union’s region and structure policy for program period 2021—2027 (EURA 2021) under call ESAELY-079 (application ID A91495). The funding is administered by the South Savo Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY).

External flow tests 10–11/2025
A wide range of friction-reducing coatings are tested using flat plate samples and external flow. Both easy-to-apply short-term treatments (used in the pretests) as well as semi-permanent or permanent coatings are tested.

Pretests 6/2025 – Flow friction reduction
Preliminary flow friction reduction tests were performed in June 2025 in a towing tank using four easy-to-apply commercial coatings on a competitive single scull rowing boat. The results are carefully analyzed and used to plan the next phase of external flow tests on flat plates.
